The ERC released China’s progress on thermal power technology on September 20, which indicated that the country’s installed thermal power reached 1.06TW by the end of 2011, surpassing the US to top the world with the most installed capacity. Thermal power has been accounting for more than 70% of the total installed capacity in a long run.

China’s installed capacity of electricity has been growing rapidly since 2002, especially since 2006 when the annual newly added installed capacity was around 0.1TW. Currently China’s ultra supercritical power generation technology is internationally advanced and the development and application of large-scale air-cooled generators is leading in the world, making China the country with the most extensive application of large-scale circulating fluidized bed boilers in the world.

Data from ERC showed that from 2004 to 2010, China had successfully grasped world-leading thermal power generation technology along with the operation of a number of GW-level ultra supercritical power generators in Huaneng Yuhuan Power Plant, Huadian Zouxian Power Plant, and Guodian Taizhou Power Plant. The country’s power industry has entered into the “ultra supercritical” era.

By the end of 2011, China has successfully put 38 GW-level (ultra) supercritical power generators in operation. Thermal generators of 300MW and above accounted for 70% of the total number. The electricity industry has saved energy and cut down emission by adding environmental-friendly generators with high capacity and parameters. In 2011, the national standard coal consumption for power supply was 330g/KWh. The unit coal consumption for power supply was down by more than 50g compared with 2002.
